Taekwondo, which is the traditional martial art of Korea, now has golbal family of 50 million people all over the world thoroughout 175countries.
Taekwondo has been selected as an official event for the first time in the Sydney Olympics 2000, and it will be one of official events in the Athens Olympics 2004 and many coming Olympics in the future. Taekwondo is now a sport loved by all kinds of people, and it will help allowing people to learn about Korean culture.
Compared to other Olympic sports events that have taken almost 100 years to be selected as official events, Taekwondo has accomplished it in just 20 years of time.
A true internationalization means that other foreign countries accept our traditional things, and try to understand them, and vice versa.
Now, Taekwondo is in the van of spreading Korean culture and spirit to people all over the world by means of Olympic Spirits.
Kukkiwon homepage is designed for informing Taekwondo people of the news about Kukkiwon, the mecca of Taekwondo, and also for stimulating the development of Taekwondo not only in Korea but also in all other countries.

국기원 설립은 1972년 건립되어 올해로 33년이 되었습니다. 그리고 이제 태권도는 전세계 174개국 약 6,000만명에 달하며, 태권도가 국내외적으로 눈부신 발전을 거듭하여 오늘에 이르렀습니다.
태권도는 짧은 시간 안에 동,서양에 굳건히 자리매김하는 동양의 무도로서 명예스러운 일을 이룩해 내었습니다.
여기에 그동안 태권도의 보급과 발전에 헌신해 오신 많은 태권도들 덕분에 이러한 성과를 이루었다고 생각 합니다.
태권도를 사랑하는 태권도인과 태권도 가족여러분들에게 본인은 진심으로 호소합니다. 전임 김 운용 원장님의 안타까운 일들이 있었지만, 그분의 훌륭한 외교력으로 시드니 올림픽에 태권도가 정식종목으로 채택되는 업적을 이어가면서 더욱더 발전될 수 있도록 여러분들의 적극적인 동참과 협조를 부탁드립니다.
태권도가 국기원을 중심으로 하나가 되어 성장하였듯이, 모든 태권도인들의 화합과 단결을 이룰 수 있도록 본인은 최선을 다 할 것입니다.
국기원은 전국 태권도인들 뿐만 아니라 전세계 태권도인들을 포함한 명실상부한 태권도인들의 고향이며 태권도의 본산입니다.
그동안 국기원을 사랑하고 묵묵히 힘써온 국기원 관계자 여러분의 노고를 치하하며 여러분과 함께 열심히 노력하여 국기원의 무궁한 발전을 기약하겠습니다. 감사합니다.
